Course Description: This is an advanced level course in Art History for students who already have some knowledge of the role of mosaics in Art History. Enrollment is by consent of the instructor. The course is held at the Accademia di Belle Arti during the first and second semesters. Students are required to attend both the theoretical part and the studio laboratory and to complete four individual studio art projects. Each of the studio art projects is related to a specific mosaic technique: direct, indirect with direct method, and indirect with inverse method. Students complete the projects on 25cm by 25cm glass, ceramic and stone tiles. Credit in the field of art history (ARTHS 173C) is based on a research project written in Italian on a specific topic related to the history of mosaics in Italy. History of art students concentrate on the history and role of mosaics in Italy from the Byzantine period (Ravenna: Galla Placidia, San Vitale, S. Apollinare Nuovo) through the Medieval period (Museo Civico Medievale di Bologna) and up to the present: MAR (Museo d'arte di Ravenna) Giosetta Fioroni: La casa di Giosetta (2002), L’Unicorno by Dusciana Bravura (2007) and Kabuto (2002) by Felice Nittolo. Students are required to present evidence of first-hand knowledge of the mosaic works mentioned above and to discuss their historical significance. Emphasis is placed on Italy's current 3 dimensional mosaics that are no longer simpply decorative in nature but rightfully claim their role as independent works of art.
