Course Description: This course presents important current issues in education such as education as a means of national development both historically and currently. The course examines specific recent international agendas for reform, such as education and credentialing for individual advancement and global competitiveness, the sort of modern lifestyles implied by literacy as well as gender imbalances in enrollment and literacy from multiple international perspectives; and considers the possibilities of international dialogue on education for sustainability; and discusses the structural social differences in socioeconomic class that affects the individual's education. Texts: Readings are assigned from various books and journals such as THE SCHOOLED SOCIETY: THE EDUCATIONAL TRANSFORMATION OF GLOBAL CULTURE by David Baker, and EDUCATION, GLOBALIZATION AND THE NATION STATE by Andy Green. Assessment: thoughtful participation online and in-class (10%), current issue reports and presentations (30%), midterm exam (30%), final exam (30%), and journals (may tip the scale for a borderline grade).
