Course Description: This course gives a broad outline of a number of Japanese musical genres along with an understanding of the way in which the musical styles exist within Japanese culture. Emphasis is placed on the cultural and geographical position of Japan within the larger context of East Asia. The course compares Japanese musical traditions to other Eastern and Western musical traditions. The course takes a practical approach with frequent demonstrations and the opportunity to try various traditional Japanese musical instruments. No particular musical or linguistic skills are needed to take the course. References include: TRADITIONAL JAPANESE MUSIC AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS by William P. Malm and MUSIC IN JAPAN: EXPERIENCING MUSIC, EXPRESSING CULTURE by Bonnie C. Wade. Assessment: class participation (10%), presentation (20%), midterm exam (20%), essay (30%), and final exam (20%). Students attending fewer than 80% of classes will be unable to pass the course.
