Course Description: This course introduces students to the notion of human rights, outlining international human rights enforcement mechanisms and the application of human rights standards in Australia. Students examine the adequacy of Australia's existing human rights machinery, and the reasons for Australia's reluctance to adopt a Bill of Rights, and government policies toward indigenous Australians, women, and refugees. Students also consider current legislative changes to combat terrorism and consider the implications of these changes on Australian's civil rights.
