Course Description: This course introduces students to the big environmental challenges of our time with an emphasis on those related to agriculture. Students learn both the concepts of security (e.g. food, water, soil) and the planetary boundaries of important earth systems. Students examine the physical constraints, ecosystems, and food production systems of Australia and analyze a set of case studies representing key agro-ecosystems. The course has a strong practical emphasis, with computer laboratory sessions introducing students to the analysis of spatial data related to climate, water, and food. This course includes a field trip to regional New South Whales where students gain experience in field-based measurements and exposure to different land management systems.
