Course Description: This course explores what the comedies of Aristophanes, Menander, Plautus, and Terence say about the societies they entertained, why the rumbustious popular form of comedy developed into the more thoughtful and reflective New Comedy of Menander, and how comic themes, preoccupations, and conventions had such an enormous influence on subsequent European drama.
