Course Description: This course introduces students to issues relating to the rehabilitation of public offenders including adults (males and females) and youth offenders. Students study the major theories of criminality and community attitudes impacting government approaches to rehabilitation and incarceration policy. This course examines the different approaches and policies to incarceration and the goals of these approaches. Students analyze the roles and functions of personnel employed within the prison system and the various health issues associated with public offender rehabilitation, including drug addiction, mental illness, and HIV/AIDS. Students are also introduced to the probation and parole system and the various alternatives to full-time incarceration, including community service, day release, work release, and weekend detention.
