Course Description:	This course provides an overview of traditional African festivals and funeral ceremonies from an anthropological, sociological, and folkloristic perspective. The course pays particular attention to conflicts in these social phenomena and their respective roles and importance in African societies. The course examines the ritualistic and ceremonial functions of festivals and funeral ceremonies and looks at how the drama of the festival and funeral ceremonies bring to light happiness, hope, despair, anxieties, contradictions, and conflict between the forces of continuity and change in the African world.
