Course Description: | This course undertakes a panoramic study of selected works of Latin American prose from pre-Colombian times through the twentieth century, reviewing Latin-American literature from modernism, avant-garde, revolutionary literature, to the literature of the boom (narrativa y cuentos), postmodernism and current trends. It looks at the origin of these movements and their various characteristics. Specifically it will cover the novel, short story, and essay and will provide students a broad, general knowledge of the major literary trends in Latin America as well as a selection of representative authors and their works. While engaging the specific issues each of the selected authors underscore, we actively explore their place within wider global contexts and the parallels that can be established. The course is conducted as a seminar and is expected to further develop students' presentation skills as well as critical and analytical ability.
