Course Description: This course offers a thorough foundation in spoken and written Japanese for academic purposes and provides students with learning strategy to become more independent learners. Students listen to the passages such as simple explanation and public announcement, read various texts on familiar topics, and comprehend them. They express their opinions and impressions on what they hear or read in speaking and writing using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical expressions, converse and discuss simple topics, and give presentations. By the end of the term, students become able to read about 650 kanji, produce about 450 kanji, and write a passage with 600 to 800 letters using appropriate written style. Assessment: attendance, participation, homework assignments, and quizzes (50%), test and final exam (50%).
