Course Description: This course introduces modern Japanese literature from around the turn of the 20th century to present time. The course assigns the reading of many short stories translated from Japanese to English to provide a glimpse of their literary richness. Texts are analyzed in the context of modern Japanese society, its modernization and westernization. The course also presents Japanese literary styles and to critically analyze modern Japanese literature and write a literary analysis. Text: THE OXFORD BOOK OF JAPANESE SHORT STORIES by Theodore W. Goossen. Assessment: class attendance and participation (20%), presentations (30%), 1,000 to 1,500-word midterm paper (20%), and 2,500 to 3,000-word final paper (30%).
