Course Description: This course examines the history and development of cultural studies in different social contexts. Cultural studies examines how we have become who we are; how the rules governing our cultures are constructed; and how we as social beings live in society. This course outlines the historical formation of cultural studies and introduces key concerns and theoretical perspectives in the field. Specifically, the course focuses on the way in which popular culture and media are associated with these issues. Overall, the course considers the following issues: key concerns of cultural studies; how cultural studies helps us understand the way in which our society, as well as our identities are constructed; how we view important issues shown in popular media and cultural texts, such as movies and television programs; how the production, circulation and consumption of popular media texts mix with the idea of “power”; and why it is worth examining our ordinary cultural experiences (e.g. TV watching, shopping, traveling).
