Course Description: This course examines the various religions of Asia are examined both historically and topically. Emphasis is on the religions of China, Korea, and Japan. This course examines the history, beliefs and practices of some of the major religions of Asia, including Hinduism (Ancient Hinduism, Bhakti movement, Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism), Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism (Indian and Southeast Asian Buddhism, Buddhism in East and Central Asia), Confucianism, Daoism and Shintoism. The course compares and contrasts the beliefs and practices of different traditions, and how the process of interreligious and cross-cultural interaction has affected the development of each tradition.
