Course Description: Since Renaissance, biographies of artists have continued to play an extremely important role in establishing the history of western art. This course focuses on such biographies, especially of Italian artists, to see how they formed the image of the artists over time. By closely examining artists in their historical and cultural background, writing style, the way they are read, and their afterlife, it will be clear that artists’ lives are often manipulated to serve the writers’ intention. In class, students will be required to read excerpts from the featured texts and make short presentations about them.
