Course Description: This course introduces basic elements of Japanese religion and examine how religious thoughts shaped the meaning and development of some key features of Japanese culture, which integrate in one way or another some element of Shinto, Buddhism, or other religious tradition. The purpose of this course is to provide basic explanations of Japanese religions and trace their impact or relationship to cultural expression in Japan. The course introduces some of the building blocks of Japanese religion and discusses particular cultural phenomena whose meaning is in one way or another derived from religious thoughts and beliefs. At the background of a growing interest in local cultures as the result of globalization, the main objective of this course is to contribute to a better understanding of Japan by analyzing key features of its religious culture.
