Course Description: This course in development economics covers the following topics: the meaning and measurement of economic development, growth theories, poverty and income distribution, the role of geography and institutions, fertility and population growth, the role of credit markets and microfinance, health and nutrition, education, female empowerment and economic development. The objectives of this course are to introduce some central themes and issues of economic development; to demonstrate the importance of evaluating theories of economic (under) development and scrutinizing empirical evidence to understand the key features of the development process; and to encourage critical reading of the journal literature in the area of economic development.
