Course Description: This course introduces basic grammatical structures and sound patterns of Arabic with attention to mastery of script, pronunciation, and listening comprehension. The course develops basic language skills through the distinction of sounds, words, spoken sentences, and the ability to understand them in dialogue situations. The course introduces writing of the Arabic script and reading simple sentences and paragraphs related to what has been learned in the listening and speaking components. This course introduces basic vocabulary with some of the most frequently used words in a variety of social situations which include asking for basic information, describing educational background, and discussing family and friends. Topics of study in fundamental Arabic grammar include the study of Arabic parts of speech; various forms of the Arabic verb system; demonstrative pronouns; question forms; prepositional phrases; pronouns; derivatives of the noun and of the verb; the singular, the dual, and the plural forms; negation; and the conjugation of simple verbs. The course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Arabic language.
