Course Description: This course focuses on the disintegration of Europe during the first half of the twentieth century. This was the period encompassing the two world wars, both of which began on the European continent and slowly spread out across the world. The course takes an in-depth look at the causes, connections, and comparisons of these two wars, but also at the other types of political violence (revolutions, civil war, ethnic cleansing) that colored these fifty years. Students are given an understanding of the history and historiography of this radical period and educated on the analysis of primary sources. The research skills thus obtained are then used to conduct independent research, which concludes the course.
