Course Description: In this course students become acquainted with the history of globalization over the past five centuries, the economic principles and effects thereof, and the key theoretical approaches to globalization and global interconnectedness. Students look into the definitions of globalization, at the underlying driving forces and the various stages that can be identified in the process. Imperialism, the industrial revolution, and the communication revolution have greatly influenced globalization. Some periods also demonstrated a counter movement; world wars and decolonization put global connections under strain. This is referred to as “deglobalization”. Lastly, the classes look at the debate surrounding modern globalization controversies and examine the arguments for and against.
