Course Description: Students will be expected to be able to compare Romantic-period literature with its sources in earlier periods (medieval, early modern, and seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature). Students will also be expected to be able to conduct basic poetic analysis of English poetry, which necessitates an understanding of metre, rhyme, fixed and stanzaic forms, and various figures of speech. This course is an introduction to the major writers of the Romantic period. The course gives a general overview of the period 1770 - 1838. The course focuses on the 'canonical' or 'big six' Romantic poets: William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, George Gordon (Lord Byron), Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats. We also read works from other Romantic-period authors including Hazlitt, De Quincey, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, etc.
