Course Description: This course introduces the field of comparative politics, which employs the method of comparison to the study of the world's domestic political systems. Attention is given to comparing the American and Japanese political systems and placing both within their respective regions (North America, East Asian) and within the family of advanced democracies. Some attention is given to the political cultures of Southeast Asia and the role of authoritarianism in the region's search for democratic stability.
