Course Description: In order to motivate students to service-learning activities such as community service-learning, international service-learning or work camp, various activities of ICU, NGOs, community and international organizations are introduced, and prepare the students for meaningful service activities. Service-Learning in a single phrase can be summarized as an educational program which "links classroom knowledge with community service guided by reflection". Students apply their academic learning to actual service and also learn from the service experience. Service-Learning provides students with an opportunity to develop their insights to the real world and nurture sense of global citizenship, caring for others and responsibility. This course provides students with basic knowledge concerning service learning. Students also learn about various activities conducted by NGOs, local municipalities, and international organizations where students served in the past. This course requires 12 hours of service work (practicum) outside the campus in addition to class periods on Thursdays. Students' service work schedule will be arranged in a way that matches the needs of community organizations at which they serve. Students may not dictate to the organizations at what time on what day the organizations should host them.
