Course Description: This is a graduate level course that is part of the Laurea Magistrale program in oceanic history. The course is intended for advanced levels students only. Enrollment is by consent of the instructor. Students who complete a term paper on a pre-approved topic are awarded one extra unit for the course. Maximum units for the course are six. The course focuses on travel accounts, novels, historical sources, and scholarly works and critically engages with the historiographical debates that characterize Indian Ocean studies. Special attention is placed on Indian Ocean cultures, economies, and societies that transcend national histories and engage with a non-Eurocentric approach to processes of globalization. The course is divided in three main sections. The first part of the course discusses the spatial and chronological boundaries of the Indian Ocean and how they have changed over time. The second part of the course examines the human dimension of the Indian Ocean history, focusing on the movement of free and unfree laborers and their impact on Indian Ocean societies. The third part of the course focuses on the circulation of commodities and currencies in the Indian Ocean. Students are assigned weekly readings that are designed to complement the lectures. Assessment is based on participation in class discussions and a final paper. Students write and present a paper on a selected commodity, group of people, religion, language, disease, or other thematic subject and situate it in the Indian Ocean world. The topic and the bibliography must be pre-approved by the instructor.
