Course Description: This is a graduate level course that is part of the Laurea Magistrale program in Medical Genomics. The course is intended for advanced levels students only. Enrollment is by consent of the instructor. Students who complete a term paper on a pre-approved topic are awarded one extra unit. Maximum units for the course are five. The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the genetic principles underlying hereditary diseases, and how innovative genomic technologies are used to improve diagnosis and treatment. The course is taught in English and helps familiarize students with the appropriate terminology (and literature) in the rapidly evolving discipline of medical genomics. The course has two modules: Module 1 is the lecture part; Module 2 is the laboratory. Module 1 discusses topics including sequencing the human genome, medical genetics, identification of disease genes, Mendelian diseases, chromosomal diseases, mitochondrial diseases, multifactorial diseases, and pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. Module 2 consists of laboratory experiments divided into two parts: a wet-lab course, and a part using informatics tools. The course includes traditional lectures and PowerPoint slides plus classroom exercises on human genetics (pedigrees, risk calculation, Hardy-Weinberg principle, and linkage analysis), discussion of original research articles on topics related to the lectures, and the human molecular genetics laboratory. Assessment is based on a written exam in English consisting of multiple-choice questions, true/false questions, and exercises in human genetics. Students have the option of supplementing the written exam with an oral exam in English.
