Course Description: The course studies the theoretical and practical issues of health and illness. It covers the history of medical sociology and the nature of health care delivery in the Third World, with examples from Ghana. Discussions cover health and illness in the socio-cultural context; the political economy of health care delivery; and the hospital as a social system. Specific topics include the environment, gerontology, maternal and child health, drug abuse, AIDS, and the pharmaceutical industry and its relationship to the Third World. Texts: B.
