Course Description: This course focuses on human rights and related issues and institutions in Africa, especially contemporary Africa. Topics include the notion of human rights; human rights violations and breaches; human rights institutions and bodies; regional and international human rights mechanisms; and protecting and enhancing human rights. Regional human rights mechanisms discussed include the African Charter on Human and People's Rights, the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), and the African Union Charter.
