Transcript Title: MYTHOLOGY
UC QTR Units - Division: 6.0 - Upper Division
Course Description: Mythological stories have played a major role in the development of European culture. In the modern world they are still omnipresent in films, literature, fantasy, music, and visual arts. In this theme course, a number of selected topics elaborate on the meaning of myths, sagas, legends, and folk tales. The Classical mythology of the Greeks and the Romans is central, but this Classical tradition is placed in the context of world mythology. In this way, students become familiar with the most important traditional stories and motifs that still have an effect on contemporary culture. In addition, the course is concerned with the question of what mythology is. What are the differences and similarities between myths and fairy tales? What role did mythological stories play in the religious, ritual context in which they were originally told? How can we understand the meaning of these seemingly curious and often horrific stories?
