Course Description: This course explores popular song as a mode of cultural expression in Japan since the Meiji period. Two main aspects are involved. The first is to examine the lyrics of (and listen to) a number of well-known popular songs, analyzing both form and content and exploring the connections (if any) with traditional poetic expression. The second is to place the songs in a historical and social context as a means of approaching the problem of cultural identity in modern Japan. Japanese-language ability is not automatically assumed, but a willingness to approach Japanese songs in the original is expected. Assessment: class participation, presentation with written summary.
