Course Description: This course presents literary works of great Japanese authors of the early twentieth century with emphasis on their spatial imagination. Thematically, the course is divided into two parts. In the first half, focus is on their imagination within the ever-expanding city of Tokyo. Writers to be discussed in this section include Hachiyo Higuchi, Soseki Natsume, Rampo Edogawa, Kafu Nagai, and Fumiko Hayasi. The second half of the course is devoted to exploring how Japanese authors conceptualized foreign cities—Ogai Mori’s Verlin, Sosuke Natsume’s London, and Kafu Nagai’s New York.
