Course Description: This course offers an in-depth introduction to Russia. Significant focus is on the period since Vladimir Putin assumed leadership at the end of 1999, but considerable attention is also given to the history of the Soviet period and the post-Soviet transition under Boris Yeltsin. The course begins with a quick overview of Soviet and Russian history up to the present, and students will be encouraged to pay attention to current events in Russia. Students then will review in greater depth key events of the Bolshevik Revolution and the periods under Lenin and Stalin then move more rapidly through the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras and focus in more detail on the Gorbachev and Yeltsin periods. Assessment: two essays, participation and attendance.
