Course Description: This course covers basic concepts in theoretical linguistics while it focuses on how different kinds of meaning are conveyed and how they interact and/or are controlled by other factors, drawing examples mainly from English and Japanese. Basic concepts covered in class include reference (extension), sense (intension), proposition, natural language and logical language, valence and thematic roles, and contextual information. Assessment: written assignments and class participation.
